Need to get your head right for weight loss?

It’s often a catch cry of people trying to lose weight. “I know what I have to do but just can’t keep my efforts going.” The problem can lie with what you are trying to achieve. If your goal is unrealistic and the “diet” you are trying to follow is too strict then you really are fighting an uphill battle. Once you get yourself on the right track with a sensible eating plan it can be your mind and your old habits that are the sticking point!

Try these Ten Tips for Gaining Control of your Dieting Psyche:

  1. Believe in your ability to change habits and lose weight regardless of your past experiences.
  2. Have a good reason for wanting to lose weight – this helps with motivation.
  3. Open your mind to the possibility that your thoughts and interpretations of different events are not facts and therefore can be changed.
  4. Be realistic about your weight loss goals and your plans for change.
  5. Don’t ban any foods, that simply gives you something to rebel against.
  6. Deal with the habit rather than replacing the food with a healthier choice – if you’re not hungry it’s not food you’re after.
  7. Be prepared to accept that your needs are just as important as your family’s needs. Weight loss success requires you to prioritise yourself.
  8. Listen carefully to the things you say to yourself and don’t believe everything you hear!
  9. If what you have done in the past hasn’t worked, don’t fall into the same traps again, do something differently.
  10. You choose how you react in different situations, just because it’s what you have always done doesn’t mean it’s helpful or can’t be changed.
