With four weeks to go until Christmas Lisa Renn, Accredited Practising Dietitian and Director of Mind Food Dietetics in Wantirna says, it’s not too late to shed a few kilo’s and feel healthier for Christmas.

Here are some tips for getting started:

  • Set one new goal each week. There is no need to be perfect tomorrow. Changing things gradually is more likely to last
  • Aim to decrease your coffee by one and increase your water each day
  • Start planning around your least healthy meal or snack. Planning meals and snacks means you are more likely to make better food choices
  • Now that day light savings is here try for one extra walk per week. Start small, you can always build up

Lisa says “It’s not about what you feel you should do, rather doing what you can do. Start with small, achievable goals and build up as you feel comfortable.” Making healthy changes to your lifestyle slowly means you are more likely to create new habits rather than just starting another “diet”, Renn says.

The Dietitian’s Association of Australia (DAA) will be encouraging Australians’ to make healthy changes for Healthy Weight Week again this year, in January 2010. If you want to get an early start go to www.healthyweightweek.com.au and get some more tips and resources to help you get started.

An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) can help with all your weight loss and nutrition needs. To “Find an APD” in your area go to www.daa.asn.au .
