Top 10 Ways to Kill Cravings

1. Ask yourself, are you really hungry? You may be eating out of habit.
2. Have a drink of water (or low calorie/kilojoule drink), maybe you’re just thirsty.
3. Distract yourself: go for a walk, phone a friend, read a book. Try anything that will take your mind off food. You know that when you’re busy you’re not thinking about food.
4. Choose low GI foods as these will provide longer term energy and can help you feel fuller for longer.
5. Don’t skip meals; being over hungry means your resistance to temptation is lower.
6. Prepare healthy snacks in advance so when the craving hits you are ready with a good snack choice.
7. Choose foods from all the food groups so your body is not lacking in any particular nutrients.
8. Choose higher fibre foods as these can help you feel fuller, are generally lower in energy and are great for your bowel health.
9. Top up on protein at lunch. Protein can help you feel fuller for longer and help you beat those mid afternoon cravings.
10. See an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) for help with healthy food choices and changing unhealthy habits.

3 Tips for Long term Weight Loss

1. Keep your motivation up! Why do you want to lose weight? Make sure you have a good reason. Reflecting back on what you hope to achieve can be a great way to boost falling motivation levels.

2. Prepare for the long haul. Fad diets work in the short term but then you stop and go back to normal eating, so don’t be surprised when your weight goes back to normal too! Sustainable weight loss is about making healthy changes in your lifestyle and sticking to them even after you have lost the weight.

3. Don’t avoid foods or food groups. This is not a sustainable way to eat because eventually you will “break out”. Long term weight loss is learning to make better food choices. A Dietitian is your weight loss and nutrition expert. “Find an APD”, www.daa.asn.au.
